If you’re looking for the best neighbourhood to live in Hua Hin, don’t brush aside Hin Lek Fai. What you may lack from being away from the beach, you will gain in value for money. Hin Lek Fai has a charm of its own, attracting a diverse mix of expats, retirees, and young families seeking a laid-back and affordable lifestyle.
The area is named after Kao Hin Lek Fai, or Flint Stone Hill. The ‘mountain’ raises 163 meters above sea level and provides stunning views over Hua Hin town at three kilometers away. There are plans to develop the viewpoint into a major tourist attraction, though it’s unsure if and when this will happen. For now, it provides a good escape from the relatively more crowded Hua Hin downtown.
Affordable living
Compared to downtown, Hin Lek Fai offers a more relaxed and affordable lifestyle. Housing options are diverse and cater to various budgets, with pool villas, townhouses and even some condominiums available for rent or purchase. The cost of living is also generally lower than in Hua Hin downtown, making Hin Lek Fai an attractive option if you’re on a budget.
Transportation
Getting around Hin Lek Fai is easy and relatively inexpensive. Cars and motorbikes are the most popular mode of transportation, allowing for easy navigation and exploration of the town and its surroundings. Songthaews, shared taxis, are also readily available and offer a convenient way to travel within the town. Keep in mind that at night, the curvy and elevated streets can be dark, requiring extra care when driving and riding.
Food and entertainment
While Hin Lek Fai doesn’t have the same vibrant nightlife scene as some other neighborhoods, it offers a good selection of restaurants and cafes catering to various tastes and budgets. Newcomer The Lodge has quickly become a favorite among foreigners and Thais alike. Its decor and menu wouldn’t be out of place in downtown Bangkok.
Or go out of the box and head to The Banana Ketchup (what’s in a name?), the one and only place in the region to try Caribbean classics.
La Douce France by l’Occitan offers great coffee and croissants, and Daddy Deli is often celebrated for serving the best pizza (and meats) in greater Hua Hin.
Grocery shopping
Supermarkets in the neighborhood are limited to convenience stores, however, Villa Market and Makro are a short drive away. Fresh produce can also be found at smaller local markets.
Schools and education
Hin Lek Fai is well-served in terms of education. Hua Hin International School and Da Vinci International School offer a high standard of education, catering to both Thai and international students. Additionally, several pre-schools and nurseries provide early childhood education options.
Healthcare
Hua Hin Health Park opened its doors in December 2023. Run by Be Well Medical Center and Spine Clinic, with another Daddy Deli branch, it’s an excellent location for first-line healthcare. And if needed, Bangkok Hospital is only a few kilometers into town.
Sports
Black Mountain is the beating sports heart of Hin Lek Fai. Besides the well-known golf course with driving range, Black Mountain offers a football academy and padel courts. Families will also enjoy the water park and wakeboarding lake. T Rex Sports Center is a great option for gym, badminton and pickleball. For tennis, head to Techniksport Tennis Academy.
Overall
Hin Lek Fai offers a peaceful and affordable lifestyle close to the beach. With its beautiful natural surroundings, friendly community, and range of amenities, it’s no wonder why this charming town is attracting increasing interest from expats and locals alike. If you don’t mind a bit of a drive to the beach or shopping, Hin Lek Fai is definitely worth considering.
