As the weather is cooler and the holidays are behind us, there is no better time to go outdoors and lace up your running shoes than now. These are some of the most iconic short runs in Hua Hin.
Hua Hin beach run
• Distance: 5 km (one way)
• Terrain: Soft sand, flat and scenic
• Atmosphere: tranquil, refreshing
• Highlights: listen to the soothing rhythm of the waves
• Logistics: start at Hua Hin Beach near the pier and run south towards Khao Takiab, enjoying the gradual change in scenery from bustling beachfront to quieter shores. Wear sandals or trail shoes for better grip on the sand. Avoid the temptation to run bare-foot as it will leave you with blisters!
Khao Takiab Hill climb
• Distance: 1 km (one way)
• Terrain: Steep asphalt path with switchbacks and stunning views
• Atmosphere: Energetic, challenging, with the reward of breathtaking panoramas stretching across the coastline
• Highlights: Feel your calves burn and lungs work as you conquer the ascent. Reward yourself with panoramic vistas of Hua Hin Beach and Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park
• Logistics: Start at Skoop Beach Cafe (opens at 9am) at the foot of Khao Takiab Hill and run up to Wat Huay Mongkol temple. Take the steps for the ultimate challenge! Wear proper running shoes with good grip and be prepared for short, steep inclines. Bring water and sun protection. Be aware of the monkeys!
Kao Tao Reservoir loop
• Distance: 2.5 km per lap around the lake
• Terrain: Flat, elevated walking and running track
• Atmosphere: The lake is surrounded by lush greenery, and there are often birds singing in the trees. The path is not too crowded, even during peak season, so you can enjoy your run in peace and quiet. Catch the sunrise or sunset for the best experience
• Highlights: The lake is beautiful, and the mountains in the distance provide a stunning backdrop.
• Logistics: Park your car and start at the main road Hua Hin 101, around 15 minutes south from Hua Hin town. Then run the track in any direction. Finish your run with a drink or food at one of the many restaurants around.
Walk/run intervals are perfect for beginners, allowing you to soak in the scenery and adjust your pace. Experienced runners can push their limits with sprints or time trials. Or turn it into a fartlek workout, alternating between sprints and recovery jogs.
